They are shutting down the plant, “ my father said.
The Ford Motor Company on Pulaski Avenue was closing and my father was out of a job.  My mother and I were standing in front of our house at 46th and Springfield when my father came home from work that fateful day.

My parents were life partners who shared their Polish heritage, their religion and their family. Their core values transcended poverty, illness and personality clashes.

Why was my 42-year-old mother going back to high school?
When I was around 12 years old, my mom announced that she had registered for classes at Jones Commercial High.
“Huh?”  I replied.
